Turkish government is looking into claims that Minecraft is too violent

Minecraft is rated at suitable for children over 7 years old in much of Europe, but in Turkey children could be stopped from playing the game depending on the result of a government investigation. Aysenur Islam – Turkey’s family and social policy minister – is investigating the game to see if it is too violent or encourages aggression. The investigation has been prompted after a journalist told Aysenur Islam that players could score points for killing other characters – including women – and asked what the government would be doing about it.

If the government investigation decides that Minecraft is too violent, it could lead to a nationwide ban. However, Minecraft doesn’t award points for killing characters, and mostly encourages creativity rather than violence, so we expect the investigation to find little evidence that the game is too violent.
